A SHORT HISTORY OF THE
OLD BARTLEYANS' ASSOCIATION (OBA) :
The OBA was established in 1961 by a group of dedicated ex-students mainly from the 1958 to 1960 cohorts. The first President of the Association was Tan Teck Seng and he was ably assisted by fellow members like PK Velu and his younger brother, the late Athisdam, as well as Tan Chee Teik, Tan Siak Hoe, Allen Chua, George Lim, the late Jerry Koh Thong Hee and others.
Annual functions were humble affairs held in simple restaurants and eating houses, but attracted great enthusiasm.
Later a newsletter call OBAN (OBA Newsletter) was published periodically, under the main effort of HooYew Gee, who was once with the Straits Times. This went on for several years but had to stop due to lack of support and other reasons.
Membership expanded and the Association grew from strength to strength under the able and enthusiastic leadership of the various Presidents (please see "The Committee" section) as well as their hardworking and motivated committee members. Annual Dinners then progressed in size and sophistication, and were held in well-known hotels.
Other activities included excursions (to Johore etc), assistance to the alma mater, and various charity work.
The Association was very active right up to 1994 after which, for various reasons, interests waned and the activities went into a decline.
Since 2001, there has been a re-awakening of interests for the Association, and a resolve to make the OBA rise up to its former dynamism and glory.
The former, and present Management Committees have been given the honour to rekindle the fire and take actions to this effect. The MC intends to do its best and requests all members to pull our resources together in making the OBA truly one that we can all look upon with enthusiasm and pride.
