Mr Hwang Soo Jin Chairman, Singapore Reinsurance Corporation Ltd Class 1954

Mr Hwang Soo Jin, a chartered insurer has a solid background in the insurance field. After qualifying as an associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute in 1959 in London, he devoted 12 years of his life to Commercial Union Assurance Plc. and rose to the position of manager for Singapore and East Malaysia. He then spent another 25 years with United Overseas Insurance as its founding managing director and actively participated in the founding and development of Singapore Reinsurance Corporation Ltd of which he is chairman since 1984. During his insurance career, he was twice elected president of the General Insurance Association of Singapore and served as Chairman of the Insurance Ombudsman Council for 15 years. Other insurance appointments past and present include chairmanship at Sun Alliance Insurance (S) Pte Ltd; Alt Chairman, Allianz Insurance (S) Pte Ltd and directorships with UOB-related insurance and assurance companies. He also sits on several other publicly listed companies' boards including Haw Par Corporation Ltd, United Industrial Corporation Ltd, Singapore Land Ltd and Lee Kim Tah Corporation Ltd.

Mr Hwang was also MP for Jalan Kayu for nearly two decades between 1968 to1984. He was deputy speaker of parliament for a term (1981 - 1985) and a longstanding member of the Public Accounts Committee, chairing the committee for seven of his 13 years there (1977 - 1984).

He continues to advise Asean Insurance Council and the Asian Civilisations Museum . Over the years, he was appointed to the boards of numerous statutory boards and government-linked organisations including URA, TAS, POSB, CISCO, Export Credit Insurance Corporation of Singapore, National Crime Prevention Council, National Fire Prevention Council and others.

He is a Justice of the Peace and an honorary fellow of the Singapore Insurance Institute. He was made a “Friend of the Arts” in year 2001 by the Minister for Informational & the Arts.
