Mr Gopinath Menon

Mr Gopinath Menon was a student in the early days of Bartley from 1956 to 59. He was an avid chess player in the period when Bartley had one of the best chess teams among schools. What he remembers most during this period is the love for varied subjects ranging from Literature and History to Mathematics and Physics that the teachers instilled into him. He still has fond memories of some of his teachers.
He went on to do a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering at the University of Malaya and was awarded a Colombo Plan Fellowship to do a Master's degree in transportation engineering at the University of New South Wales.
Gopinath was with the Public Works Department and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for 37 years, devoting his whole career to transportation engineering. He was their Chief Trans-portation Engineer for many years. His landmark project was the implementation of the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) System on Singapore roads in 1998, the first of its kind in the world. He has written many technical papers which have been presented at international conferences and in leading technical journals.
He is now a freelance consultant in traffic engineering undertaking overseas jobs such as in Mauritius, Jakarta and New Delhi, including work for the World Bank. He is also an adjunct Associate Professor with the College of Engineering at the Nanyang Technological University, teaching transportation engineering for the past 15 years.
Mr Gopinath Menon was awarded the Efficiency Medal (1977), Public Administration Medal (Bronze) (1980) and Public Administration Medal (Silver) (1989) for his work in the civil service. In 2004, he was awarded the Public Service Medal (PBM) for his 25 years of voluntary work with welfare organizations.
His hobbies include tennis, origami, Toastmastering (public speaking) and writing short stories and plays (a passion he picked up from Bartley), some of which have been performed by local amateur drama groups. He continues his work as a volunteer with the Students Care Service and the Ramakrishna Mission He is married with three children.
