OUTSTANDING BARTLEYANS

Mr Benson Soong
PhD Candidate, University of Cambridge
Class of 1986 - 1989

Benson is an example of how a student educated through Singapore's neighborhood schools (Mattar East Primary School, Bartley Secondary School, Tampines Junior College) can stand out academically and commercially in competitive Singapore.

He holds a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Auckland, New Zealand (where he won the Senior Prize for MSIS in 1998), and a Master of Science from the National University of Singapore (which he completed under a full NUS postgraduate research scholarship). He is currently reading for a PhD at the University of Cambridge (where he is a Bursary recipient from the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust).

Prior to his PhD candidature, Benson founded Learn More, a firm focused on publishing educational books, and co-founded eLC Pte Ltd, an eLearning company based in Singapore well known for their work in the Defence and Education sector.  Previously, he served as the Head of Instructional Design for SGX main-board listed Singapore Computer Systems Ltd.

He is a Judge for Brandon Hall's Excellence in Learning Award (since 2003), is a Reviewer for the Informing Science & Information Technology Education Joint Conference (since 2004), and serves on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Interactive Learning Research (since 2004), among others. He researches and writes actively in the area of eLearning, knowledge management, and learning in general, and has written two books, three book chapters and numerous papers in these areas. His latest book "Study Less, Learn More!" was a Bestseller in Singapore (from September to November 2006).

Benson helps out with Bartley as often as he can, and has contributed time and resources in helping Bartley students learn better. He wants Bartleyans to know that in life, it does not matter who they are, but what they do; it does not matter where they start, but where they end. The world is full of initially disadvantaged people who made good, and if Bartleyans plan, pursue and persevere, even their wildest dreams would come true.
