OUTSTANDING BARTLEYANS

Dr Ng Cheng Siong
Director, School of Chemical & Life Sciences
Singapore Polytechnic
Class 1956 - 1959

Dr Ng is the Director of The School of Chemical and Life Sciences (CLS) in the Singapore Polytechnic (SP) since 1997. CLS is one of the new industries that Singapore has chosen to cultivate as one of its main growth engines in its next phase of economic development.

CLS trains Singapore's next wave of technologists for the various life sciences industries (encompassing the biotechnology, agrotechnology, optometry, medical and allied health sectors).

Dr Ng proudly remembers be ing the top boy for his cohort of 1959. As part of the privilege, his name was engraved on a plaque displayed at the school hall.

During his school days, he was a chess player. Back then, Bartley had a formidable chess team which was among the top of the league.

While in Bartley, Dr Ng had acquired an all-round education. Today, he is emphasising this belief to all his tertiary students in the CLS, Singapore Polytechnic.

Dr Ng  mentions that success comes with a lot of perseverance and self-belief.

A lover of reading since young, he would encourage all students to read more and widely, and  to pursue what they aspire to be passionately.

Dr Ng was awarded The Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2003.

A grandfather of 3, he is a devout Christian and a dedicated family man.
