Dr Low Boon Chye

Mr. Low Boon Chye was a student at Bartley Secondary School from 1959 to 1963 when he took the Cambridge School Certificate examination. It was at Bartley where he developed an interest in mathematics when he was taught by the fabulous mathematics teacher Mr. A. J. Chattier in Secondary III and IV.

Boon Chye enrolled at Raffles Institution for Pre-University in 1964. He did not finish his Pre-University because he was too eager to go to college. He took the Higher School Certificate examination in 1964 as a public candidate and was enrolled in 1965 at King's College, University of London to read a first degree in Mathematics.

Boon Chye went to the University of Chicago in 1968 to study Physics, receiving a Master degree in 1969 and a Ph.D. in 1972.

Except for the period 1975 to 1978 when Boon Chye worked with his late father Mr. Lau Kuei Huat in their family shipbuilding business in Jurong, Boon Chye has been working as a theoretical plasma physicist. He is Senior Scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (www.ncar.ucar.edu) in Boulder, Colorado, USA, an institute sponsored by the US National Science Foundation to engage American universities in a national research program meteorology, climate, atmospheric chemistry, solar physics and the global change of the Sun-Earth system. Boon Chye's research is in the physics of the solar atmosphere on which he has published more than 150 research papers.

Boon Chye was visiting Tan Kah Kee Professor at the Nanyang Technological University in 2006.

Boon Chye is married to Daphne Nai Ling Low, a psychologist, and they have a son Yi-Kai who is a graduate student at the University of California, San Diego.
