OUTSTANDING BARTLEYANS

Dr Tan Kok Choon Associate Professor (Practice) at Department of Decision Sciences, in NUS Business School, and The Logistics Institute - Asia Pacific (TLI-AP) Class of 1972 - 1977

Dr Tan Kok Choon was in Bartley from 1972-1975 for 'O' levels and continued from 1976-1977 for his 'A' levels. After his full time NS, he enrolled in NUS Faculty of Science, graduating with First Class Honours in Mathematics in May 1984.He joined the Department of Mathematics as a Senior Tutor since August 1984. Subsequently, from August 1985 to June 1990, He earned an NUS Post-Graduate Overseas Scholarship to pursue his PhD studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

Dr Tan Kok Choon graduated with PhD in Operations Research from MIT in June 1990 and returned to the Department of Mathematics at NUS as a Lecturer. After more than 10 years in the NUS Department of Mathematics, as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Assistant Professor and Departmental Manager, in October 2000, He moved on to join the world-renowned container terminal operator, PSA Corporation Limited, as Manager (Operations Research) in the Operations Planning Department. In 2002, He was seconded part-time to LTA as Manager (OR) to help set up an OR Department in LTA. In 2005, he was attached to the Group Technical and Operations Development Department in PSA International Pte Limited. Upon returning to PSA Singapore Terminals in 2006, he was covering the position of Container Terminal Process Manager, in charge of driving process improvement projects and initiatives with the four container terminals in Singapore. Motivated by a strong desire to bring my industrial experience back to benefit students in the university, he accepted a joint-appointment as Associate Professor (Practice) in the Department of Decision Sciences and The Logistics Institute-Asia Pacific, starting in December 2009.

He is married to Ho Teck June, Senior Lecturer in the School of Multimedia and Infocomm Technology in Singapore Polytechnic. And have two sons, both in RI, who are going on to JC1 and JC2 next year (2010).
